About This Site

Launched in 2006, the Metablogs Network is a collection of websites called metablogs, each of which is focused on a particular topic. Each metablog is itself is comprised of dozens (sometimes hundreds hundreds) of additional individual blogs, websites written by people with a passion for that particular topic.

Metablogs are similar to other magazine-style websites on the Internet, but with one exception-- metablogs are written by members of the community itself. You'll find metablogs on a variety of topics, such as food or home improvement.

The Virtuous Circle

Anyone can join a metablog and become a contributor. Why join? Because metablogs are good for writers...

All you need to do is start your own blog, apply to register as a contributor to the metablog relevant to your topic, and then regularly write new entries on your blog. Your writing automatically appears on the metablog home page, putting your latest writing in front of thousands of new readers.

Editorial Staff

While structured like a traditional publication, metablogs are staffed differently. To help clarify how things work, here's a look at some of the key roles involved in daily operations.
  • Aaron, Managing Editor - As founder and technical wonk, Aaron tends to the general health of the network. This includes launching new metablogs, finding and supporting editors, answering contributor questions, and fixing leaks in the plumbing.
  • Metablog Editors - Editors maintain the editorial standards of each metablog. This includes ensuring member blogs adhere to editorial guidelines, writing occasional feature stories, and minor work promoting the site. In return, editors get lots of good karma from their fellow bloggers and recognition as a leading blogger in their given field.
  • Metablog Contributors - Contributors are the life blood of every metablog. They are the individuals who write their own blogs, which then feed the latest content featured on the metablog home page. Anyone with an existing blog can become a contributor simply by applying for membership to a relevant metablog.

History of the Metablogs Network

Our first metablog began in 2005, growing out of a website originally developed to help readers follow blogs by people renovating their own homes.

Launch with just 22 members in March of 2005, a year later houseblogs network grew to include 245 contributing blogs, 90,000 monthly visitors and over 500,000 monthly page views.

In January of 2006, we introduced a companion metablog focused on food. During a four month beta period over 85 food-related bloggers registered with the site.

We expect we'll introduce additional metablogs over time on topics that seem to make sense.
